“Make me a razor that looks like it was forged by a craftsman alone in the woods with crude tools”
That’s what Pete asked for, along with some simple engravings in an 1800’s style.
To communicate this I did my forge finished shank and spine, being a bit more crude with the forging than usual. The scales were assembled with a single pin at the base, and a washer and pin at the pivot, and then a Sho Shugo Bahn Finish was applied. This is an ancient wood preservation technique where the wood is gently burned and sanded to increase its longevity. The scales were slightly distressed, and then carefully honed.
It was unusually difficult to make a well functioning blade with crude features, but a top performer. The single hollow grind sings during the shave, and the engraving on the spine is a nice note of what’s important in life.
Live simply.
