A razor that celebrates the nautical.
My customer (all the way from Estonia) requested a razor that incorporates maritime life, so I decided to make it look like a blade that would be found in the ships stateroom, alongside the few, yet important possessions that would be carried out to sea.
Rough wood calls to drift wood, crude pinning, and faux ivory note a ventured makeshift feel. The steel is a high carbon tool steel, with a forge finished spine for grip, and appeal. A coincidence occurred where the etching of the seaside mountains blended into the mountains continuing the forms abstractly. Very happy with that.
I had a warm remembrance while crafting this blade. My grandfather (Wes) was an accomplished sailor, and he was really in my heart throughout this piece. Wes would sail regattas, and sometimes let me crew. I was awful on his boat. I knew my knots, but that’s where it ended. With an adequate crew member, he’d take home a trophy, regularly. Sailing with my grandma, he’s take 1st place with an ease that suggested there should be an award above 1st place. Still, he took me.
At one point, I capsized our boat (turtling), and he never got mad, and took me out to water again and again (more fishing boats thereafter).
He was so kind, intelligent, and fostered meaning and companionship with all he met. I remember his persistent care for my growth and education as a young man, and encouraging me to be more outside than in, and his bad jokes.
Happy father’s day, to all the fathers, and the grandfathers.
